SPACE CLEARING FOR THE NEW YEAR
A good time to space clear your home is at the start of a new year. This year, I’d like to share the steps I take when I clear my own home.
Space clearing is a way to instantly shift and transform the subtle, energy or the feeling in your home or workspace.
I believe that our homes mirror and reflect our consciousness, our inner state of being, and the act of clearing or re-aligning the energy in our living spaces shifts our energy and our experience of the energy within our living spaces.
There are seven basic steps to I use when space clearing my home. I usually do the first two steps the day before the clearing.
- Cleaning. I thoroughly clean my home from vacuuming carpets and floors to windows. When everything is clean the energy automatically feels better.
- Personal preparation. After cleaning my home, I make sure to take time to eat a nourishing meal and bathe. I like making this step a bit of a ritual. I love taking an epsom salt bath, (great for clearing toxins from our bodies while grounding us), with a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil added for clarity and focus.
- Preparation. At this stage I create a beautiful display that includes my space clearing tool (I personally love sound instruments – my favorite is a crystal singing bowl), a bowl or vase of fresh flowers, a beautiful table cloth, several candles and a fabulous crystal or semiprecious stone. I use this space to set my intention and to say my house blessing.
- Clearing. There are many ways to clear a space, this is what I do. I begin at my front door and moving clockwise through my home and each room I gently ring my singing bowl as I move through the space, paying attention to the clarity of the singing bowl. If the bowl sounds dull i know to spend more time in this space. When the bowl resonates with a clear tone, I know the area is clear.
- Blessing. Once I’ve cleared my entire home I go back to the front door and begin again. This time as I move through the space with my singing bowl, I also say my blessing, or intention for my home.
- Closing. Once the entire home has been cleared and blessed, I return to my beautiful display and I state the blessing once again as I close the ceremony.
- The final step is sealing my intention or blessing into my home. I do this by placing the vase of flowers on my kitchen table. The flowers represent vibrant, living energy and reinforce the power of the clearing. Their beauty embraces the beauty of my intention and blessing.

I started out my day today planning to write several articles, what I found myself doing instead was working on my vision seed map. (A vision seed map or treasure map is a homemade collage of images, phrases and photos that compile a vision of you and your desire or goal.)
I made my first vision seed map in 1997, it consisted of an assortment of images representing my favorite things positioned in accordance with the feng shui Bagua Map. Each year I found that I added images to my map; sometimes covering previous images with new and other times expanding my map by adding additional space.
A few years ago I decided that I was going to make ‘the worlds biggest’ vision seed map. I covered the sliding closet doors in my office with cork and transferred my existing map onto the new space. Everyday you could find me sitting transfixed or busy adding new bits to my ever-expanding view of myself!
And an interesting thing happened.
Just as soon as ‘the worlds biggest’ vision seed map was complete I took it down. I didn’t plan to, it just seemed like it was time. On reflection, I think the purpose of the ‘worlds biggest’ vision seed map wasn’t in the finished product, the purpose; the meaning was in the journey.
I know, I know, we’ve all heard and probably said what you’re thinking now, “it isn’t the destination, it’s the journey”, and it’s true. As I built my map, my view, my vision of my path crystallized and became clear to me and at that point it was time to make a change.
And to make a change, I had to make space. And that meant taking the ‘world’s biggest’ vision seed map down.
As I took down my map I found that most of the images no longer had the same meaning, it felt as though their time with me was past. Remember when I said that I made my first map in 1997? Well, my new map was a compilation of all my previous vision seed maps and new images, so to find myself no longer wanting or needing the images and pieces of maps I’d had for so long came as a surprise to me.
But now, I get it. To fully move forward and embrace who I was meant to be and what I was meant to do I had to let go of what went before.
As I released each image, each piece of the past, I felt renewed and inspired confident in my new vision of myself and my work. In letting go, I opened completely to the opportunity of the future.
What changed? I did. My perspective evolved, I changed how I think about who I am and what I do. And in the process my path took a turn.
Embracing the future!
Which way did I turn? Forward of course!

Last night was a once in a lifetime experience. It was a night of magical connections, energy surges and the power of affirmation. The full moon and winter solstice fell on the same day as a full lunar eclipse – it’s been over 450 years since that last happened!
Being a Lifestyle Feng Shui™ professional, I decided to use this incredible time to create a ritual and an affirmation for the coming year and I invited my husband and daughter to do the same. Surprisingly enough they did!
We all wrote our affirmations on lovely card stock and then folded it and placed each one in its own red envelope. Holding our envelopes in our hands, we closed our eyes and sent positive, supportive energy flowing through our bodies into our hands and affirmations.
We then placed our envelopes under our pillows so that they would continue to be energized while we slept.
At 2:30 in the morning the alarm went off and we all piled out of bed, taking our envelopes with us. Standing outside as the cold winter winds blew our coats and hair, we all gazed up at the moon. Our thoughts focused on our affirmations and the energy, the magic of the moment.
As the moon slowly became rusty red it was as if the envelopes in our hands heated up, igniting with the power and energy crackling in the air around us. Raising my arms to the sky I stated my intention, my affirmation one final time.
As my husband and daughter stumbled off to bed, I remained standing by the window watching the moon and thinking of what an incredible life we have, filled with love, and opportunity. Maybe this awareness, this appreciation was all that was needed to make the night magical – but a little bit of moon light, mixed with a little bit of intention, and a magical alignment couldn’t hurt!
To complete our ceremony, we placed our envelopes back under our pillows so our affirmations could energize and imbue us with their energy. And tonight, by the light of the full moon, we will create a fire ceremony to send our affirmations to the universe. Moving our thoughts from this plane to the next on the wings and power of smoke.
The full moon eclipse on You Tube
In Feng Shui winter is a quiet time, a time for deep introspection and a time for slowing down. In the stillness of winter we are able to connect to ourselves, gaining clarity on who we are and what we are meant to do. It is a time of reflection, a time to honestly review your journey and gain clarity on the road ahead.
Connecting to this clarity during a full moon empowers your awareness and ideas, imbuing them with creativity and energy. As I wrote in one of my moon phase blog posts, the full moon is a time of celebration.
“The full moon is the time for the culmination of projects and celebration; the time when your ideas, projects and things you began during the new moon are fully energized. This is when the bloom on the flower is at its fullest. This is the time to dance, a time to celebrate and connect to the moon at its fullest power. You could go swimming at night, dance in the moonlight, have dinner outside with the moon lighting your way, take a night walk, or watch the moon as it appears in the night sky. Celebrate the full moon!
Pay attention to your creative energy. This is a time to embrace your creativity, and your dreams. Let your imagination go!
Take walks. Try out new forms of exercise. Reflect on your relationships, your goals, your achievements, the full moon is a great time to make improvements, your energy is higher and your awareness is heightened.
A ritual to incorporate during the full moon is ritual of celebration. Rituals can be as casual or as fancy as you like. It’s up to you; it’s not necessary to follow a prescribed ritual. What’s important is that whatever you do, you do from a place of connection. The more personal you make it the stronger it will be. All of the ideas I mentioned above could serve as a ritual, even something as simple as inviting friends over to dinner, a celebration of friendship!”
You still have time to incorporate a full moon ritual into your life this year. Make this the first of many opportunities you experience as you make a deeper connection with the natural energy patterns in the world around you.

We are profoundly influenced by the spaces we inhabit. Our homes have an enormous impact on our state of mind. They can be places that uplift us and bring us a sense of joy. And they can be places that drain our energy and create a sense of unease.
We’ve all had the experience of walking into a room after an argument and the room felt uncomfortable. The energy in the room felt thick and heavy – the tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife.
And we’ve also experienced spaces that felt warm, comforting and inviting. Space clearing raises the vibration, the energy within a space literally liberating old stagnant energy and imprints and replacing them with fresh, vibrant, nurturing energy.
Space clearing is a way to instantly shift and transform the subtle, energy or the feeling in your home or workspace.
Space clearing is a term first used by Denise Linn in the early 90’s. It is an integral branch of Interior Alignment®.
In Interior Alignment® we believe our homes aren’t simply four inanimate walls. We believe our homes mirror and reflect our consciousness, our inner state of being, and the act of clearing or re-aligning the energy in our living spaces shifts our energy and our experience of the energy within our homes.
As Denise Linn states in her book Sacred Space, “Homes as well as people are nourished by how we hold them in our hearts. They have a living spirit that is sustained through the reverence and love that we hold for them. Without that care they become inanimate and lifeless; the spirit recedes and they become merely physical structures that can neither sustain or nurture us.”
Space clearing can help you:
- Release old emotions
- After an illness
- After a move or life change
- After an argument
- After remodeling
- Release recurring patterns of behavior
- Increase vitality
- Enhance the quality of your life and living environment
There are four basic steps to Space Clearing.
- Preparation
- Purification
- Invocation
- Preservation
Preparation. It is important to take time before the clearing process to establish your intention - what it is you’d like to achieve or change by clearing your space. Your intention is your most powerful ally and the most powerful tool you can use to re-align your living spaces. Without intention, all actions are hollow and meaningless – like going through the motions.
With intention your actions have purpose, clarity and direction. There is meaning and power in everything you do.
This is also the place to incorporate a bit of clutter clearing. I know, you’re thinking, “Oh no, not clutter again!” Clearing clutter is an on-going process and one that is particularly helpful prior to space clearing. It’s good to release items that are no longer useful, needed or desired. This way we have made space for the change we desire and our space clearing actions will be more effective. (For more information about the clutter clearing process, click here.)
Purification. This is the actual clearing or re-alignment process. There are many different methods and techniques you can use to clear a space.
Some are:
- Incense
- Smudge or sage
- Sound instruments (drums, bells, etc.)
- Water
- Crystals
- Salt
My personal favorites are sound instruments. I love how the resonance of instruments expands and fills a space as the energy is re-aligned. You can actually hear the difference!
The actual tool you use is less important than establishing your intention – any tool will work. Choose a tool that aligns with you, one that feels comfortable and natural for you to use.
Before beginning, stand in silence with your eyes closed. Breathe in and out slowly; focus your thoughts on your intention and the energy of the room. With each breath, feel your energy expanding and becoming more powerful. When you feel ready, begin to move through each room in a clockwise manner, releasing stagnant energy as you move through the room.
Invocation. After you’ve cleared the stagnant energy from a room, return to the doorway of the room and once again close your eyes and focus your thoughts and breath on filling the space with positive, uplifting energy. Put your intention into the space. You can do this with the use of an affirmation, a house blessing or dedication or simply by giving thanks for all this is good in your life.
Preservation. This is the Feng Shui step! To maintain the energy and clarity of the clearing it’s good to create a physical affirmation. This can be many things, just about anything, as long as the item has meaning for you and represents your intention for your home.
Objects hold the energy you give them, positive or negative. It is the power of your association with things that empowers them. So, the actual object chosen is less significant than your association with it.
Choose objects that resonate with you, objects that fit seamlessly into your personal sense of style and your spaces. If I can look around your home and see ‘Feng Shui cures’, you haven’t selected the right items. The best Feng Shui is the Feng Shui you feel, not the Feng Shui you see. And the only way for Feng Shui adjustments to feel right is when they fit into the space in which they are used and they look like they belong there!
Some things you can use are:
- A crystal
- A written affirmation put into a place of honor.
- Placing a written affirmation in the soil of a plant – then every time you water the plant envision that you are nourishing or energizing your intention.
- A beautiful lamp
- New positioning of your furnishings to reenergize and realign your space with your intention
- An accessory that you LOVE that supports the energy of your intention
- A picture or piece of art symbolizing your intention
- A beautiful, lush plant
- A home altar
- Any object that symbolizes your intention
The energy of a place is created in part by the people who have been there, past events, past emotions and the energy patterns inherent in our style of building.
Energy doesn’t flow with ease in corners, which is why these areas tend to create pockets of stagnation or dull energy. There simply isn’t any movement.
10 Simple ways to uplift the energy in your home
- Clean and vacuum
- Clear clutter
- Clean the windows
- Replace old, burned out light bulbs
- Open the windows; let fresh air flow into your home
- Spritz your rooms with essential oils (lemon, lavender, eucalyptus and pine are wonderful for this)
- Burn incense or use an essential oil diffuser
- Light a candle
- Add fresh flowers or a beautiful plant
- Play inspiring music
Space clearing re-aligns the energy in our spaces, creating movement and vitality in place of stuck, stagnant energy.
When the spaces around us are nurturing and supportive our quality of life improves.
And that’s a good thing!

The last of the moon cycles is the waning moon, which is similar in energy to fall. This is where energy begins to recede. It’s a natural time to release what isn’t needed. This is the perfect time for clutter clearing!
What is clutter? Clutter consists of those items in our surroundings that have no home of their own. Clutter creates stagnation, a lack of energy in our spaces and in our minds. It encourages a sense of procrastination, a putting off for tomorrow what we can do today.
Clutter is anything unused, unfinished, unresolved, tolerated or disorganized. Not sure? Ask yourself these 3 questions.
- Do I love it?
- Is it useful?
- Do I need it?
If you answered ‘yes’ keep it, it isn’t clutter. If you answered ‘no’, release it. Sound simple? It can be, if you are honest with your answers. Start slowly so you don’t become overwhelmed. You’ll be amazed at how your energy changes as things are cleared.
Moon cycles and you. You don’t need years of training to create a ritual. A ritual is a symbolic event, marking a place in time. The best ones come from the heart. Moon rituals are a series of actions that you do to bring about the change you desire in alignment with the energy of the moon and it’s phases.

In my last blogpost, we talked about the waxing moon: a time to put your wheels in motion. The waxing moon is a great time to create a sacred space in your home, a deliberate composition of sorts. Place objects and belongings in your sacred space that represent the idea or thought you had during the new moon – when you reinforce the thought or desire, you set the wheels in motion.
The next step in the process is to set your intentions in your sacred space and do it in a way that keeps your intention in your awareness. You might write your intention down on a beautiful piece of paper and then place it in the place of honor in your sacred space. Or bury in the soil of a plant, and every time you water the plant imagine that you are watering or feeding your intention.
The next moon cycle is the full moon. The full moon is the time for the culmination of projects and celebration; the time when your ideas, projects and things you began during the new moon are fully energized. This is when the bloom on the flower is at its fullest. This is the time to dance, a time to celebrate and connect to the moon at its fullest power. The new moon is a time for planting, aligning with earth energy and the cyclic patterns of nature to optimize the health and outcome of the plantings. That’s an awful lot like Feng Shui, isn’t it? If we observe the patterns of energy in a place, and we understand them and work with them, we yield a predictable outcome.
We refer to the cycles of nature as the seasons, spring, summer, fall and winter, the magnetic ebb and flow of the earth and its relationship to the moon. And there are rituals that align with each of the seasons just as there are rituals that align with the various moon cycles. In nature all energy flows in a cyclical manner, just as day gives way to night and then night gives way to day. The moon affects the energy flow in the world around us. While the sun is the yang energy that supports growth and life, water is the giver of life, the yin source.
The waxing moon is a time for the projects you began during the new moon to hit their stride. This is a time to boost your own energy reserves, when our projects hit their stride it is easy to overextend ourselves, to overdo it. Be sure to make time for yourself, keep a balance between life and work. Go with the flow, not against it.
Life is infinitely easier when you go with the flow, the natural energy, as opposed to fighting it. That sense of swimming up stream or jumping over one more hurdle or banging your head against a wall – all of those are wonderful phrases that we have created to describe exactly what going against the flow is like! We’ve all done it and, we can probably all agree that we’ve all done it more than once and we will continue to in different areas and in different times in our lives.
When you catch yourself going against the flow, especially now that we’ve defined it a little bit, think of it as an opportunity for you to choose a new pattern, to choose to step away from these struggles, the fight, the constant battle, and move back in alignment with your own energy. And the energy around you.
A wonderful ritual to incorporate into your life during the waxing moon cycle is to take regular Epsom salt baths. Epsom salt connects you to the earth while removing toxins and impurities from your body. Water soothes, replenishes and restores your body, connecting to the energy of the moon. A ritual like Epsom salt baths, are simple, convenient and connect you to the natural energy cycle of the moon. When we connect to the natural energy patterns around us we are truly in the flow. If you feel compelled or drawn to create your own ritual or ceremony, I encourage you to honor that. When you are connected and committed to what you are doing it is not only more meaningful, it is also far more powerful.

I believe that we always know the right thing to do. We just fail to listen. We’re so busy that we don’t hear our intuition, our inner voice, speaking to us.
The new moon is the perfect time to slow down and connect to our inner awareness. To begin to plant the seeds for new ideas and projects. This is the perfect time to be still, to meditate, and to connect to who you are at the core of your being. In this place of deep connection and introspection, the information you seek will come to you. It might come to you during a dream, or in a seemingly random thought or impression, perhaps even in the words of a song or message in a movie. How it comes is of little consequence, what is important is that you are aware of it.
To be aware, we have to be listen and in order to listen, we have to be quiet; we have to be still. The energy of the new moon can support you as you move toward a place of introspection.
Each moon cycle lasts approximately seven days. At the end of one cycle is the beginning of another. They flow seamlessly into one another. Like all energy, when we follow the flow we are in alignment.
What are some things you can do to align with the energy of the new moon? This is a wonderful time to connect to the cleansing, nourishing energy of water. A simple way to do this is to take several Epsom salt baths over the next week.
You can also take this time to reconnect with nature; it’s easy it’s all around you! Sit out in your backyard or on your lawn or lean against a tree and feel the space around you. Or just take five minutes a day for a quiet moment with a cup of tea. Connecting doesn’t have to be a long meditation or an hour out of your day – it only takes a moment.
When you take that time to be quiet, you are present in the moment. And the magic of awareness comes to us in the moment.
It is important to find your own way of being still and your own way of connecting. There are so many methods available – one isn’t better than another; they are all simply different options.
If you choose to take a bath, you are bringing in the connection to water. The moon and water are very strongly connected to one another. The moon cycle controls the tides. Water is both emotionally healing and cleansing.
Use the new moon energy to get centered and quiet, and listen to your intuition and carefully plant the seeds of what is to be!

Spring is quickly approaching, and with it, a new moon cycle.
There are four phases in each moon cycle: the new moon, the waxing moon, the full moon, and the waning moon. The lunar cycle follows a pattern of renewal, similar to the four seasons. You begin with a time of introspection, followed by emerging ideas, manifestation, release and then moving back to introspection.
The first moon phase, the new moon, is a time of introspection and contemplative thought, time for connecting to your inner awareness. The season that aligns with this energy is winter.
This is a wonderful time to set new intentions, affirmations and to give thought to the changes you would like to bring into your life.
As you begin to cycle out of the new moon into the waxing moon you align with the energy of spring. It’s the time when ideas are energized. There’s a sense of wanting to manifest something in your life so it’s an excellent time to put the wheels in motion to begin to set up what you need to achieve your desire or idea. Just like in spring, the sprout bursts through the ground and it’s the beginning of a cycle of growth.
The next cycle is the full moon, which is similar to summer. It’s a time of a culmination of projects and celebration. It’s a time when there is a lot of energy expended. I compare it to the full bloom of the flower or the plant. This is the time to really come alive and to completely immerse yourself in your creative energies.
Last is the waning moon, this is where energy begins to recede. It’s a natural time to release what isn’t needed. This is the perfect time for space clearing. If the purpose of space clearing is to release and let go of that that isn’t serving you any longer, such as clutter clearing, the waning moon is perfect.
In my next entry I’ll talk about the new moon and we have one coming on March 16th! This is the perfect time to dive deep into the depths of yourself, connect to your inner desires and prepare for spring!
